Boven de pet

A quote by Dutch comedian, singer & writer Toon Hermans, refering to the proverb “boven de pet gaan”, which is similar to “flies over the head” (as in: beyond comprehension). Quite some words in this sentence end on an r, just use one which is most comfortable to you! Don’t try to imitate my attempt at an r!
er = there / at that place
gaat = goes (second and third person singular)
meer = more
boven = above (or upper)
pet = cap
eronder = underneath
Hope this helps!

Klokje

We’ve had a variation on “home, sweet home” earlier on this profile. But here’s another proverb with the same meaning.
zoals = zo (so) + als (as / like)
klokje = klok (clock) + -(t)je (diminuative suffix)
thuis = home
tikt = ticks, from “tikken” (to tick)
nergens = nowhere
Hope this helps!

Bovenkamer

Okay, several things:
1) I’ll try to upload three times a week from now on: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
2) Two figures of speech for the price of one today!
3) For more information on the diminutive suffix “-(t)je”, see http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-tje
4) It’s unclear that the origin of “een uiltje knappen” is, theories are it’s derived from trying to “catch an owlet moth”, or “to take the opportunity to grab the kind of bird”. Since both the birds as well as the moths are nocturnal, it became a euphemism for taking a nap

The word (and phrase) list for today:

mankeert = from “mankeren” (to limp / to fail)
er = there / at that place
bovenkamer = upper room (in this case “brain”)
in de bovenkamer mankeren = being crazy/stupid
want = because
uiltje = little owl (or a member of an owlet moth/nocturnal butterfly family)
knappen = to snap / to crackle

Aap uit de mouw

What a cute “doodshoofdaapje” (squirrel monkey, literally: “deadshead monkey”)! Let’s hope it doesn’t come with any inconvenient truths!
For those who don’t know either proverb, it basically means “So now the truth gets out!”. nu = now
komt = comes (from “komen” – to come)
aap = monkey (the english “ape” is “mensaap” (man monkey) in Dutch)
uit = from
mouw = sleeve

Hope this helps!
