I wanted to do a throwback to the early days of this profile (which is only five months ago) and translate a part of a public domain story.
Searching for a text I came across “Dutch Fairy Tales for Young Folks” by William Elliot Griffis, which contained the story “The Goblins turned to Stone”, containing a passage of a nightmare (which read a lot like a description of a succubus). These days this phenomenon is generally thought of as sleep paralysis. The story can be found here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/7871/7871-h/7871-h.htm#xvii
Anyway: the word list!
sommige = some
plezierig = pleasant
kaasdromen = kaas (cheese) + dromen (dreams), a compound word made up by the author as far as I’m aware
over het algemeen = in general
dacht = singular past tense of “denken” (to think), compare it with english “thought”
merrie = mare / she-horse
geklommen = perfect tense of “klimmen” (to climb)
maag = stomach
Hope this helps!
