Suggesties

A more formal way of saying it would be “zinnen of woorden WELKE jullie willen horen”, but oh well.
Feel free to submit phrases you’d like to hear in Dutch! Keep in mind that I’ll skip suggestions similar to existing videos!

The words:

zijn = are
zinnen = sentences
jullie = you (plural!)
willen = to want
horen = to hear
stuur = to steer / to direct (also used as “to send” in regards to messages, letters or postcards)
bericht = message
antwoord = reply / answer
filmpje = video (literally “film” with the diminuative suffix -je, but words ending with an m get a -pje suffix. For other exceptions, see: http://woordenlijst.org/leidraad/15/1)

Hope this helps!

Druk

I’m fairly certain the photo wasn’t shot in the Netherlands. Especially around this time of year.
Anyway, a short but sweet one today!

drukmaken = to make a fuss (split up in “maak … druk”) Hope this helps!

Kwalijk

Based on a request by @lisaimbire (thanks!), who asked if I could read a sentence for people apologising when they’re still learning Dutch. I modified it a bit in order not to repeat too much of two videos back.

Neem mij niet kwalijk = Pardon me / I’m sorry / My apologies (more literal translation: Don’t take me badly), alternatively “sorry” or “pardon” can be used
maar = but
aan het = indicates it’s an ongoing process, another example: “wij zijn bakstenen aan het tillen” (we’re currently carrying bricks)
dus = so
het zou helpen = it will help
als = if
uitspraak = pronunciation
corrigeert = from corrigeren (to correct), notice the french “zj” sound for the g

Hope this helps!

Leenwoorden

Dutch has provided other languages words (my favourite being “maalstroom” (grinding/milling stream)), but has adopted some as well. Here are some! Notice the different pronuniation of “computer”. net zoals = just like
andere = other (when related to persons, it’ll be “anderen” (others))
leenwoorden = loan words
krijgen = to get
vaak = often
draai = twist / turn
voorbeelden = examples
zijn = to be
e-mail = email (the dash is really important in order to distinguish it from “email” (vitreous enamel), a coating of molten glass)
sigaret = cigarette (from French)
stekker = electrical plug (from German “Stecker”)
muur = wall (from Latin “mūrus”)
straat = street / road (from Latin “strāta”) Hope this helps!

Praten

Since the Dutch have the annoying habit to switch to English as soon as they hear someone with a foreign accent, this might help! 😉 kunt = could
alstublieft = (if you) please (if you’re talking to a friend or minor you could say “alsjeblieft”)
praten = to talk
leren = learn
taal = language

Hope this helps!

Sinterklaas

A festivity especially loved by children is the annual Sinterklaas (an abbreviation of Saint Nicholas’ Eve, where “Santa Claus” is derived from). Of note is the phrase “chocolade- en banketletters”, where the dash is used to abbreviate “chocolade(letters) en banketletters”. Duitse = German
grensgebied = border area
Sinterklaas = Santa Claus (informal form of both “Saint Nicholas” and “Saint Nicholas’ Eve”)
gevierd = from “vieren” (to celebrate)
lekkernijen = delicacies
feest = feast day/festivity/party
kruidnoten = small spiced shortcrust biscuit rounds, small versions of “speculaas” (see background photo)
chocolade letters = chocolate letters (see background photo)
banketletters = Dutch letter, a pastry shaped in a letter or roll made of puff pastry and almond paste

Hope this helps!

Slingers

Because it’s the birthday of the one who asked me to start this profile! And funny how I mention garlands and cake and neither of those are in the accompanying photo.

The words:

hang … op = from “ophangen” (to hang something (up))
slingers = garlands
zet … klaar = from “klaarzetten” (to set up / to lay out)
gebak = pastry / cake
er = there
iemand = someone
jarig = the act of having ones birthday (“birthday” in itself is “verjaardag”, note the “jaar” (year) in that word)
vandaag = today
hartelijk = warmly / cordially
gefeliciteerd = congratulations

Hope this helps!
